To better serve the needs of public safety, Harris combined secure, standards-based IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) technology in the licensed 4.9 GHz band with the VIDA Network. The network provides a unique set of features, including guaranteed quality of service and scalable capacity, which are required for true mission-critical broadband applications. The VIDA Broadband Network allows for seamless integration with Harris's VIDA platform, thus allowing for future equipment interchangeability and seamless integration with other IP-based networks. The VIDA Broadband network can be seen as extending the enterprise WAN to remote locations using the licensed, contention-free 4.9 GHz public safety band. Common applications include remote surveillance video (streaming), mobile broadband access to vehicles via “Hot Spots,” backhaul of IP-based LMR traffic, connection of remote precincts to the enterprise and/or VIDA network, network connectivity to mobile command vehicles, and other high-speed data applications.
